Education
Art education is for everybody!!
DVAC is for artists and art supporters - all that is required is the desire to be around others who have an affinity for the visual arts. (You must have, or you wouldn't have made it this far into the site!) If you're not an artist, spending time with working artists is a great learning opportunity. You'll hear about process and you'll discover new ways of looking at art - not to mention new art to look at.
And if you're an artist, continuing education is important on so many fronts, because there is not a single, obvious path to being an artist. No degree, no skill set, no association guarantees you will be able to make a living in your chosen career. In fact, being an artist is more than a career - for most people, it's a primary identity that goes back to childhood.
A lot of artists work at non-related jobs, then go to their studios and work in isolation, spending a lot of money and time to create something they often have no idea how to sell. It's not an easy life, and we know it!
DVAC offers programs to make it easier to be an artist (and easier to get to know artists). We have retreats, workshops, critiques, dialogues, field trips, art-making events, get-togethers, professional development meetings; all kinds of things to give artists and art supporters community, knowledge and contacts. Come renew yourself and your ties to the arts community with DVAC.
Professional Development
Workshops Throughout the year, DVAC offers professional development workshops for artists and educators.
DECAVAC
DVAC will collaborate with Dayton Early College Academy (DECA) to provide the seventh-grade students from this unique charter school a rich, multi-layered art experience, during four 90-minute visits to the gallery. Activities will assist in fulfillment of the State of Ohio Fine Arts Academic Content Standards and help students to complete the “Gateways” criteria required for graduation. Exhbiting artists and staff will discuss concept and craft behind the work, and students will try their hand at a related art project, as well as write about their experiences. DECAVAC is sponsored in part by Vectren.
The Barbara C. Cline Memorial Fund is dedicated to exhibits and programs that honor long-time DVAC employee Barb Cline’s dedication and interest in the arts and in the community.

DVAC hosted its first artist in residence, Liliana Basarab from Romania during Fall, 2010, who brought new ideas about contemporary art practices, spurring lively discussion.
